Luna County, New Mexico, and Tennessee-based BOLDplanning recently started the process of updating the County’s existing Multi-Jurisdictional Hazard Mitigation Plan (MJHMP).

The work began with Luna County’s Office of Emergency Management and plan stakeholders being invited to attend a virtual Kick-off Meeting on Tuesday, June 22, 2021. The meeting, safely conducted via  Zoom® given the ongoing pandemic, had 42 participants. Among them were representatives from participating Luna County jurisdictions and the New Mexico Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management (NM DHSEM). Also in attendance were BOLDplanning representatives, Emily Long, PCP, and Karla O’Grady, PCP, as well as the public at large. With all questions pertaining to local hazard mitigation addressed, the plan update will be completed over the next few months.

By updating its previous MJHMP (December 2014) and gaining plan approval from FEMA, Luna County and its participating municipalities,  the City of Deming, NM (the county seat), and the Village of Columbus, NM, will be eligible to receive federal funding (emergency and non-emergency) for hazard mitigation purposes.

If you are unfamiliar with Luna County, it is located in southwestern New Mexico, bordered on the south by Mexico. According to the U.S. Census Bureau Quick Facts (2019), it is home to 23,709 people.

“Special thanks to Philip Rodriguez with the Luna County Office of Emergency Management, for making the Hazard Mitigation Kick-off meeting such a great success,” said BOLDplanning representative, James Woulfe, CBCP. “Our mitigation team looks forward to working with you and so many others from Luna County in the months ahead.”

For over 17 years, BOLDplanning has partnered with state, local, tribal, and territorial governments to develop comprehensive, FEMA-approved Hazard Mitigation Plans that genuinely support emergency preparedness and community resilience every day.
