Drought is a common problem across the entire country; though its causes and effects can vary dramatically from location to location. Some cases of drought develop very quickly and only last a short time, whereas others (which are oftentimes exacerbated by extreme heat and/or wind) can span for years, or even decades. Such periods of drought can have significant environmental, agricultural, health, economic, and social consequences. For these reasons, drought is often included in many state and county Hazard Mitigation Plans (HMPs).

In coordination with the National Drought Mitigation Center and the American Planning Association (APA), representatives from FEMA’s Hazard Mitigation Assistance Branch and the Bureau of Reclamation will discuss drought mitigation in a free webinar on September 18, 2019. The webinar is scheduled for 2:00 – 3:15 PM ET.

During this timely and important webinar, participants will learn about:

  • Using planning tools to address drought impacts in a multi-hazard context
  • Funding and technical resources that can help communities implement mitigation actions to reduce risk to drought and cascading impacts
  • Drought Contingency Planning to address drought and water resources
  • Methods to mitigate drought and incorporate green infrastructure in Hazard Mitigation Assistance Projects

Speakers include Darion Mayorn, Drought Coordinator from the Bureau of Reclamation, and Nicole LaRosa, Senior Policy Specialist from FEMA’s Hazard Mitigation Assistance Policy Branch. The discussion will be moderated by Shannon Burke, APA’s Hazards Planning Manager.
