The partial government shutdown may continue, but certain departments and certain programs, remain open and available. Among them is the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Just days ago, the Agency announced that its FY2019 Environmental Justice Small Grants (EJSG) Program solicitation is now open and that applications will be accepted through 11:59 PM Eastern on Friday, February 15, 2019.

Not familiar with EJSG? The program awards grants that support community-driven projects designed to engage, educate, and empower communities to better understand local environmental and public health issues and develop strategies for addressing those issues, building consensus in the community, and setting community priorities. Given projected increases in extreme weather events and the vulnerability of underserved populations, this opportunity will emphasize projects that address emergency preparedness and increase resiliency, as well as projects that include the needs of US military veterans and homeless populations.

Per the EPA, the FY2019 EJSG program will award approximately $1.5 million nationwide for this competitive opportunity. This number comprises approximately 50 grants (five per EPA region) of up to $30,000 each. These grants are for one-year projects. And, all projects are associated with at least one qualified environmental statute.

If you think this funding could help support projects identified within your Hazard Mitigation Plan (HMP), take time now to read the full details for the EPA’s Requests for Proposals, available on the 2019 EJ Small Grants RFP page. Over $24 million in funding has been awarded to 1,400+ community-based organizations, and local and tribal organizations across the country since the grant program’s inception in 1994. Yours could be the next one to receive these precious federal dollars.

Don’t let the February 15, 2019 deadline sneak up on you. Apply now! And, remember, all applications must be submitted through Grants.gov. Click the following link to view the opportunity on Grants.gov: https://www.grants.gov/web/grants/view-opportunity.html?oppId=310477.
